99ers Continue to Hope for Unemployment Extension in August 2010 – No Government Assistance On the Way

August 5, 2010
By

UPDATE:  It is now August 10th and the Senate has taken a one month recess.  While many of you are quite upset about this it is something that we all knew was coming.  There will be no Tier 5 unemployment benefits extension for 99ers and the only way these unemployed Americans are going to gain access to money is to find employment in the next month.  Even once the Senate returns it does not look as if we will see any type of unemployment benefits extension.

It looks as if August 9th, 2010 is here and there is no bill going through the Senate for a Tier 5 unemployment benefits extension.  This is not a great surprise and it is going to force 99ers and other unemployed Americans to make sacrifices to get a job this month.  Unfortunately, it seems to be the case that many of these 99ers have given up and they are resorting to other means to gain access to money rather than finding a job.  Hopefully this will not be the case as there are job opportunities available.

After a much heated debate was created from my article Tier 5 Unemployment Benefits Extension News and Updates – Senate Takes Recess I felt that I needed to continue with a followup.  Many 99ers and unemployed Americans continue to wait and hope for an unemployment extension in August 2010 but it looks as if there will be no Government assistance on the way.  Many of you have expressed how bad of a person I am for stating the truth.  Unfortunately, you explaining how “horrible” I am is going to do absolutely nothing to help you get a job.  Instead of actually writing comments about how “wrong” I am maybe it would be wise to consider other options such as getting out and about and building a social network.

By social network I do not mean going on Facebook and playing Mafia Wars or Farmville with other unemployed Americans.  By social network I mean people who have been successful in the past and continue to be successful.  By mingling with and being around these people you will likely get a better sense as to what is expected to become a great employee in the current economic environment.  As I have stated many times in the past, birds of a father flock together.  If you continue to play Mafia Wars and Farmville on Facebook then it will likely be the case that you get the same results you have received over the last 99 weeks.  I will lay out for you some options when it comes to getting a job and not having to worry about an unemployment extension in August 2010 or any time in the future.

#1. Go above and beyond to show YOU are a good hire!  This is something that MANY people will not be willing to do because they claim it to be a waste of time.  If you have applied for a job at the local grocery store and they claim to have no positions available, go back!  Wait a day and go back again!  Introduce yourself to the manager and get to know his name.  The next day go back and address him as Mr. Wright.  ”Mr. Wright, I know you stated you have no jobs available, but I want to prove to you that I will be a dedicated employee, is there anything I can do to just help you out in the meantime? Can I at least offer to do something to help your store?”  Some of the best workers I ever hired were those who were persistent and showed me that they would be a great hire before I even gave them an interview.

#2. Ask successful friends what to do next.  If you have completely exhausted your resources on getting a job and you have no clue what to do, call your most successful friend and ask them what they would do.  If they blow you off simple tell them that you realize they are the most successful person in your social circle and you would really like some of their advice.  If they truly are successful they will be more than willing to sit down with you and offer some advice.  The most successful individuals in the world love nothing more than to help people who WANT to be helped.

#3. Adjust and continue to adjust.  One of the biggest reasons many Americans were laid off over the last few years is the fact that they did not adjust.  Once you have been laid off there is nothing you can do about it now.  The one thing you can do from here on out is continue to adjust.  Step back and realize things will NEVER be the way they used to be.  You can sit and complain all you want but after the “Great Recession” you are going to have to adjust the way you think.  The world is much more mobile and technology based now so you will need to increase your skills when it comes to the Internet.  If this is very hard for you then, once again, ask the most successful Internet entrepreneur you know for a little bit of extra advice and assistance.  I am sure they will be willing to help if you WANT to be helped.

These are just a few of the things you can do to improve your chances of getting a job.  If your social circle is well developed then it very well may be the case that the most successful person you know can offer you a job if you simple SHOW them that you want to improve yourself.  Unfortunately, each and every day I see people who continue to digress instead of progress.  By standing still you are letting all those determined people run right past you and get the jobs that are available.

While there are MANY areas of the country that are greatly depressed but there are also areas that are thriving.  I went to the mountains last week and I saw at least TEN now hiring signs.  That is ten signs in one small area of the mountains I visited.  I am sure if I was actually looking for a job I could have counted at least 25 places that were hiring.  Mind you, these were not the most ideal jobs, but they were jobs nonetheless.  Sometimes it takes a little bit of sacrifice to get your foot in the door.  Once your foot is in the door you never know who you will meet while working at Subway.  You may stumble upon an old friend who just started a new company and she needs some extra help.  You will NOT find that on Mafia Wars or Farmville, I promise.

Over the next several days I am sure many 99ers and other unemployed Americans will state that these methods do not work.  Well, I would suggest you actually try them rather then giving up so soon.  One of the very common themes I see of those who remain on unemployment so long is that they give up way too quickly.  In my eyes, I would look at is if there is NO CHANCE of an unemployment extension and I HAVE to get out there and find a job or else.  I would have the mindset that I will not give up until I find a place of employment.  If it takes me volunteering 60 hours a week I will be willing to do it to actually talk to that ONE person who can help me get a job in August of 2010.

I hope that this rings true to some people but unfortunately I am sure I will only get hateful comments and complaints about how I am so mean.  Instead of mean I would call it honesty.  I will be the first to admit that I am not very sensitive but that has helped me to get the the place I am now, which is not unemployed.

My opinion on unemployment and the extension of unemployment insurance

Thank you for your tips and insensitivity- I am 62 years old and was brutally let go of my 75,000+ job two years ago, I lost my wife to breast cancer 4 years ago aand her illness depleted my savings over $ 150,000. Today I lost both my vehicles to repossession and have had my house foreclosed upon. I get up, suit up, and try to find work every day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I go on the internet , I network and have a plethora of friends but I seem I just am too damn old!!!!!! in today’s world. I have no family Julie , what do I do? Are you going to help me with your lame ass advice–People like you that have jobs quote unquote are killing real job opportunities.. You are very fortunate to be in your position –I would like to see how you react if the tables were turned, I never thought it would happen to me. Remember this Julie Young———–”" WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND”"

iF i WAS YOUR EMPLOYER i WOULD TELL YOU TO TAKE A HIKE BECAUSE YOU ARE TOTALLY CLUELESS TO THE REAL ISSUES IN OUR SOCIETY. oN THAT NOTE I HOPE YOU PONDER THESE THOUGHTS A MOMENT BECAUSE I KNOW YOU WONT, BECAUSE I FEEL YOU HAVE A GREAT SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT–I HOPE YOUR WORLD COMES CRASHING DOWN LIKE I DID TO SEE IF YOU CAN SUIT UP FOR 2 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sorry for the bad events that happened in your life but continuing to complain about it and hope someone bails you out has gotten you where? Eventually you need to get over the losses and move on. The quicker you do that and realize that YOU are valuable then you will find a job in no time. Once again, I do not mean to be insincere but dwelling on what has happened and how bad things are is going to get you nowhere.

You sound like the typical right winger (though I don’t know if you are) who loves to ignore facts, make up their own or simply enjoy arguing using nonsense.

If there are approximately 5 workers for every 1 job according to the most conservative statistics how can you possibly assume there is a job for everyone if they just look hard enough?

That makes no sense on the face of it. And, excuse me, you ask, “… continuing to complain about it and hope someone bails you out has gotten you where?”. Well, the unemployment extension that the GOP filibustered against for 2 months finally got passed. In large part because people were complaining to their Senators and Reps about it.

In a democracy, it is the duty of the citizen to demand redress of wrongs. That is how it works for God’s sake!

Why do you think there are so many lobbyists in D.C.? Because complaining about things (and giving big $$ donations) gets favorable legislative treatment.

And do you think that “Ageism” doesn’t exist? Do you think that all the studies showing the longer you’re unemployed the harder it is to find a job are just fantasy?

Taking responsibility for yourself, having a positive attitude and working hard are all commendable and personal virtues. But they are not platitudes to hide behind when others are in need. Ever hear of Mother Teresa? How about Jesus Christ? I hear they are both favorites of the political right.

“On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, “Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me.” Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, “Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me.” These will ask Him, “When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?” And Jesus will answer them, “Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!”

The above words were written by Mother Teresa and given at The National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. on February 3, 1994.

Ms. Young, I’m afraid I find your thinking on this matter to be superficial at best.

    Respectfully,
    CT Walsh

Thank you for the thoughts CT Walsh but we can agree to disagree. I completely agree that the longer you are unemployed the harder it is to find a job. This is the exact reason that the issue should have been address 99 weeks ago and unemployed Americans should have gone out and volunteered to prove they could help a company. Within two weeks they would have bumped into someone who noticed their work ethic and thought they were valuable. Instead, many people continue to sit on unemployent, wait, and hope that the government creates a Tier 5 Unemployment Benefits Extension for 99ers.

As of August 7th, 2010 there is no bill on President Obama’s desk for a Tier 5 unemployment benefits extension. Unfortunately, it seems as if there are MANY unemployed 99ers creating websites and petitions in an attempt to gain awareness. As I have stated, this is a lot of time and effort that could be used elsewhere such as creating value in yourself or finding a job.

That will be easy enough, here we go…..

“I picked up my phone, made ONE call and I could be hired Monday if I pass a drug test (who is guaranteed).” That was pretty easy! I could do that with at least 20 other numbers in my phone as well.

Ok Polly Anna or what ever your name is; so, you still think that Reagan tricklenomics works for the masses? Nothing get down here to the lesser and those of you that have thinks everything is fine and all you have to do is click your heels and get that great job in OZ!
Sorry to let you know Polly, those jobs went overseas thanks to greed and Reagan/Bush policies. I did not hear you or other like you say to the Big Banks, Auto companies, brokerage firms and the like “You don’t need the American taxpayer dollars, just keep your head up and drive on!” For people like you is yeah support the big corporations but forget about the real working person. God bless you Polly Anna { sorry most people like yourself have no room for God.} Keep thinking that everyone is going to get that job and America will be blessed and we all shall live in the land of milk and honey! There are some out there with college degrees that can not even get a minimum wage job at this point. If I were young enough to join the military I would have me a job, because the only one in America that has jobs is Politicians, Bombmakers, warriors, journalist and undertakers. I hope I get a job, but, I also pray you get a clue. So, lets see will you get a clue before I get a job? The world may never know. People like you remind me of that saying “Talking loud and saying nothing!”

Ms Young it is you who must face some facts. Right now I am not a 99er but may soon become one. Whether I do or not I am for a tier V. Ageism and racism still exist it’s just more well hidden. I’ve also read that alot of companies won’t hire you if you are unemployed. This is part of the Americans Want To Work Act introduced by Senator Stabenow, It does include a tier V (20 additional weeks) and tax incentives for employers to hire the long-tme unemployed. Senator Stabenow must see a need for this incentive and the additional 20 weeks. Now 20 weeks is only five months, it is not a lifetime, and it will go by very quickly. I think that most 99ers realize that finding a job is an inevitable must. Also unemployment is just enough to barely squeak by. No vacations, nothing but the bare basics. On alot of applications they ask your gender, race and age, why? I find that suspect. Is it to weed out the “undesirables”? I’ve also read where some 99ers attempted or commited suicide. The first 99ers lost their jobs in 2008, so approximately the first exhaustee was March of this year. That five months ago! Don’t you think they would have found anything if they could instead of being completely penniless. This is more complicated and political than you realize. Life is not fair so stop blaming people. Your suggestions are good but it is nothing we haven’t heard or done before.

Here is what we are telling every blogger and media outlet!

Harry Reid sent the Senate home till 9-13-10 without a 99er bill or the Small Business bill. Help remove Reid as leader of the Senate.

If you are a 99er or someone that has lost your benefits due to the Senate sitting on their hands. You can’t just blame the GOP. Yes they have blocked everything but there is a way to stop them blocking those issues. Senator Stabenow has a new bill for the 99ers but says she won’t offer it until after they go on break. That is what I am talking about, vacation is more important. Pelosi is calling the house back to pass a small jobs bill. This is for State workers (teachers, police and fireman). So Pelosi is showing toughness but Reid wants his vacation.

To make them (GOP) pass a benefit package for the 99ers and anyone that has lost their benefits the Democrats can force them to not go home until it is done. They also blocked a Small Lending bill for small business from community banks, this was a lending bill to create jobs and didn’t add a dime to the deficit. So that needs passed before one of them goes for over a month vacation. So when I say it just isn’t the GOP it is Harry Reid also he could be tough. If he thought it is more important for those that have lost than those that have allot and are going on vacation.

So flood Harry Reids phone lines and fax machines until he gets the message. If you don’t help then you have no right to complain. Here are the contact numbers:

    Washington: Phone # 1-202-224-3542 Fax# 1-202 – 224-7327

    Las Vegas: Phone # 1-702-388-5020 Fax# 1-702-388-5030

    Carson City: Phone# 1-775-883-7343 Fax# 1-775-883-1980

    Reno: Phone# 1-775-686-5770 Fax# 1-775-686-5757

Do not call if you do not have a calling plan that lets you call anywhere in the US without being charged for long distance. Use that money for your family. The rest of us have no excuse to complain then do nothing. Reid did go on vacation without fixing these issues so flood those state lines more. By the way I am not a 99er but believe they paid their taxes and they help build our country and helped pay for those in Washingtons easy lifestyles , now they need our help.

    Ms Young,

I am not a 99er nor am I on unemployment. I am a very blessed individual who has a secure job. I am very shocked that someone in your position (with a job and steady income) can say such uncaring things to people. Addressing your opinions on something that you yourself has not had the experience of. You are looking down on those who are less fortunate. How can someone make such a judgment call on a large group of individuals. I agree that there are people that take advantage of assistance. Not just unemployment, but for you to portray the unemployed as a whole in the manner you do is very sad. I feel sorry for you. A large amount of Unemployed are truly suffering for the lack of jobs in our country. My heart goes out to every one of them. No one would go from a stable career and purchase a home for their family just lose everything and end up in a shelter on purpose. Shame on you for your words. I hope that God shows you what the unemployed are going through. I hope he softens your heart for those less fortunate than yourself. I myself with there was more that I could do to help the unemployed. Oh wait their is… I can complain to with the 99ers, back them up against people so blind to the real issue; that people in our country..right next door are suffering.

May God be with all of you 99ers and those who suffer due to no fault of their own.
