The 2010 college football season is sure to be very interesting as college football is the only true sport in which every single game matter, hence the reason that college football does not need a playoff system. Today we learned that the Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram will not play in the first game for the Alabama Crimson Tide. At this point it is nothing to be greatly worried about as the defense will carry the team throughout the first part of the season. Nick Saban wants Mark Ingram to rest up and get ready for a strong SEC conference performance in 2010. After some of the week 1 performances many college students should be able to come up with some very amusing 2010 Halloween costume ideas.
The 2010 season begins is a few short days as South Carolina will host Southern Miss and USC will travel to Hawaii. Both of these games will air on ESPN which means a double header on a Thursday night! Many people on the east coast will probably not stay up for the USC vs Hawaii game but I will not miss it. I think that USC will struggle early as that is a long road trip and they will be thinking about other things than the Hawaii football team. It is also the case that Hawaii plays much better at home than on the road. As for South Carolina vs Southern Miss; I think that South Carolina will pull it out but by less than the experts think.
It is important to remember that not all areas receive the Big Ten Network or CBS college sports. Each of these channels are gaining in popularity so with a subscription to a sports package you may be able to receive each of these channels. It looks as if there are going to be some very exciting games on these two channels in 2010 so it might be worth it to make the investment for the first time in 2010. As we all know, it was probably not worth it to subscribe to these channels in the past by that may be changing this season.
Some of the most popular games on Thursday, September 2nd will be Southern Miss at South Carolina, Marshall at Ohio State and USC at Hawaii. Many of you may be thinking that the Marshall at Ohio State game will not be that intriguing but it could be the coming out party for Terrelle Pryor and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Many sports analysts are comparing this years Ohio State team to the 2005 Texas Longhorns that went on to win the national championship. In 2004 Vince Young, an agile, lanky sophomore quarterback, lead the Longhorns to a Rose Bowl victory and made the statement “We’ll be back!.” He backed up his words during his junior year by winning the national championship. In 2009, an agile, lanky sophomore quarterback at Ohio State lead his team to a Rose Bowl victory. There are many comparisons to be made between these two situations and on Thursday night, September 2nd, we will begin to better understand if Terrelle Pryor can lead his team to a national championship.
Of course, we all want to see how Lane Kiffin and the USC Trojans come out to play because, in all reality, they have nothing to play for but pride. There will be no national championships for the Trojans over the next few years as they cannot even go to a bowl. Another interesting game will be Southern Miss at South Carolina as the Gamecocks have an experienced quarterback and Steve Spurrier is trying to help this team turn the corner and become a contender in the SEC East.
On Friday, September 3rd Arizona takes on Toledo and well, yeah, Arizona takes on Toledo. On Saturday, September 4th, 2010 we will get to see a few very interesting out of conference matchups. UConn goes to Michigan in a game that could end up costing Rich Rodriguez his job. If Rich Rod does not win at least 9 games this year many feel as if Michigan is going to head in a different direction. Some feel that UConn should be favored in the first game in the “new” Big House.
Another very interesting matchup is Oregon State vs TCU in Arlington. This is a huge game for both programs as TCU has been a top 10 contender for many years and Oregon State is chomping at the bit to have a chance at a Pac 10 conference championship. There is no doubt that Mike Riley and the Oregon State Beavers will take on any team in any location and this proves it. It will be a very exciting game to watch for those of us who love to see teams that get the most out of their players.
The “key” matchup of the weekend and the ABC game of the week is going to be UNC vs LSU in Atlanta. This game has many interesting stores as UNC is facing allegations of players being paid to travel across the country for professional workouts. Some feel as if UNC should be punished severally but the NCAA is still working on the investigation. With that being said, there is no disputing the fact that this is one of Butch Davis’ most talented teams in Chapel Hill even if Marvin Austin is not on the field. That being said, they are going up against a different animal in LSU as SEC speed is something that cannot be practiced.
LSU has played well in Atlanta in the last few years so it will be fun to see if they come out and put their A game together in this contest. It seems to be the case that the SEC has had the ACC’s number over the last few years but that is like saying that Florida has had Florida Atlantic’s number. These two conferences have gone in the exact opposite direction when it comes to college football and that could be on display Saturday, September 4th.
No matter which game interests you it is exciting to finally see college football back! Over the next four months we will get to see a 12 week playoff system that cannot be duplicated. Every single game matters and that is why college football fans get so enamoured in their sport. The 2010 college football week 1 TV schedule is just the beginning to a fun and exciting season for NCAA football. Even if you are a diehard NFL fan, it is always fun to catch some college action on Saturday.
