I see your complaint…But the larger schools can afford to pay supplimental income through their booster clubs and other alumni orginazations to keep recruit and keep coaches, until a better offer or more notable school comes knocking.

Smaller, rural counties can not compete with this type of supplimental money…Thus, we have what we have…

The divisions are based on enrollment in the schools…This is only fair…

I’ll compare a low end 1-A school and a high end 1-A school….
To have a school like Columbia with a population of 150 (including female athletes) categorized with a school like Goldsboro that has 874 students to choose from causes physical mismatches and natural dominance, even with a poor coach at the larger school…This is why the 1-A & 1-AA works….

The humiliation that would be suffered by the smaller populated schools, year in and year out, during the regular season would be unbearable and not help in teaching the game to kids…

In order to meet the 10 game season required to qualify for the playoffs the 1-A teams wind up having to schedule tougher talent outside their conferences…This is how 3 & 4 win teams get seeded…

But don’t loose sight of the fact that the more expanded the playoffs become the more money the NCHSAA generates!

It ain’t always about poor coaching…The availability of good players from larger pools have more to do with it, in my opinion….Can’t get water out of a turnip…
